Effective Social Networking

There is a difference between social networking and tooting your own horn. I find several people who toot and toot, or post and post, but never interact with the people on facebook and Google +, for instance. They bore me to tears, take up too much of my page real estate and what they are doing is a form of spam. These are the people I ignore and remove from my contacts because all they are interested in is appearing like a know-it-all.

I read a recent article called "He Who Tooteth His Own Horn," that addresses this issue as regards companies use of social networking. The advice, which features an ancient drawing of Confucius (so it must be wise), in this article applies to anyone who is using facebook or any of the other social networking services. Real interfacing with clients, or "friends," requires unique responses to inquiries and posts that they make.

So, take the time to interact in a genuine manner with people who are on you friend or client list, inquiring and breaking the ice. These genuine interactions will help you gain respect and pay off in the long run. Tooting your own horn is okay on occasion, but don't make it the only way that you use your social networks. Else wise, people (like me) will take you off of their lists.

BTW, my social networks include:

The next update, "Aardvark."
Just kidding, Google.

Have you noticed a drop in your traffic and adsense clicks over the last couple of weeks? If so, then the recent update, called the Penguin update, is probably the reason. This algorithm change is something added to the previous Panda update to help reduce the amount of grey- and black-hat SEO and link-building that people do. It is all about what looks "natural."

Some people think that Google has gone too far with this update. Little people who have been making good original content have been impacted in many cases, as I have read in anecdotal accounts on The Warrior Forum and in other places.

People who are still not disappointed and deterred, to the point of quitting this game, are doing various things to help recover their rankings. Here are some of the things that are being discussed:

1.) If you have more than one link to a domain in an article, remove the excess.

2.) Using the same ip number for all of your related websites may be a killer for sites that have been targeted. Diversify your ip addresses in that case.

3.) Instead of using Google Analytics (some see it as an intrusive and damaging insight into your sights), use other resources.

4.) Inspect your sites and remove spammy backlinks. Have links in contexts that are relevant as well. If you can't remove backlinks, relaunch your site and build the links organically.

5.) Increase the quality of your articles that you are marketing. Update them with current content and get rid of out-of-date articles. Freshen up!

6.) In keeping with point #5, update your sites regularly with fresh content (this is something that has worked in the past as well). Current content is king.

7.) Instead of exact match anchor texts, use partial match anchor text. Here is a video that explains very well this concept which makes linking look more natural:

8.) In keeping with the general idea of exact match vs. partial match, don't overuse exact match domains. If you have overlapping domain names as sources for back links it may be a good idea to start up new domains to make them fit within the partial match category.

9.) Don't participate in reciprocal linking or in linking networks, which can be easily detected by Google. If you have, remove these links. Cutts has made two videos that discuss how to clean up your act in this regard.

10.) Sometimes the best thing to do is non-action. Some are advising against over-reaction, as there may be problems with the Penguin release, rankings for those who have been following the rules may go back up again after an update. But, if you feel your site(s) have been wrongly targeted by the algorithm, Google has made a simple form that you can fill out and submit.
With the advent of Google Panda and the subsequent decline of rankings of a number of web sites that lack good content and have relied on an SEO strategy of building many links on totally unrelated sites.

It seems that many people still don't get the message that automated link building is an outdated strategy of SEO. If programs like Akismet and others can detect spam content better than 99% of the time, then why can't Google do the same thing. To these people I say WAKE UP!

Be patient and know that if you do good work, you will be rewarded. Here are some tips on organic link building and a video session with Matt Cutts is included at the end.

Organic Link Building
This is a white-hat SEO strategy that helps people with sites that have good content become recognized as an authority by Google.

1. Link to sites that have keywords for which you want to rank for, in other words a relevant site.

2. Have a blog or blogs that generate content related to the keywords you are working with. Hyperlink sparingly back to your site. One hyperlink per blog entry and no more. Otherwise it will look like too much self-promotion.

3. List your blogs in directories within your subject area. The higher the rankings of the directories, the better for you.

4. When possible, do guest blogging with people who have related content. Of course, you will have hyperlinks to related sites to help create an authority network.

5. When making links on other sites, make sure that they have a higher ranking to leverage the amount of manual link-building you do. Comments with significant contributing content to the web page helps as well.

6. Submit articles to article submission sites like Ezine.

7. See the video below where Matt Cutts is answering a question about how to build links that meet Google's ranking criteria. I have covered a couple of his points, but he also talks about occasionally using contoversy, participation in related social groups, giving away free stuff and making tutorials and videos.
Your site content may be stale and your keywords irrelevant. If you update web pages by changing or adding fresh content, it sends a flag to the search engines that something new has been added to the page. If you re-orient your page to more common search terms, more people will find your web page.

Revisions for Improving Your Content. Re-reading your content may reveal grammatical and style errors. Correcting these will make for higher quality content and better reading. This will make it more likely that people will read your content. There is always room for improvement. As a boy, I used to walk along the railroad tracks picking "dewberries," a diminutive blackberry that grows wild in a part of rural East Texas. Dewberries make a great cobbler desert. I would pick in one direction and return along the same side of the bush and find more berries that I missed. Re-reading your web posts is very much like this, you always find new berries when you return to the same place and view it at a different time.

Keywords. You can use Google Adsense or Market Samurai to inspect the keywords for your site. There is also the possibility that you may want to add more keywords or change the SEO focus of the article to a new set of keywords. I did that recently on a health article, which was perfectly good as far as content goes, but it was lacking in keywords that people use in their searches. Now that it has been changed, it is more likely to be found and read.

For more specific tips on updating web pages, I recommend that you visit this Hub Pages article: Updating Your Hubs to Increase Traffic. Other tips that are included on this site include updating your keywords, changing the title, adding new content to reflect the new keywords and title, and fixing broken links.

So, my advice to all is to tend your garden of web posts. There are several advantages to updating your web pages and your efforts will very likely that grow your web traffic because of your efforts to make your content current, more readable and more relevant.Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-68820769173912620602012-03-12T12:34:00.000-07:002012-03-12T12:34:57.202-07:00Creating Links with Photos

All types of links help your web page's position.

Creating links with photos is a resourceful way to increase your web site's visibility on the Internet. Up until recently, I haven't used this technique. Now, when I am in Photoshop, I click on File > File Info and fill out the information for each photo that I upload. The copyright information for each photo refers back to the site which the photo or illustration relevant to, so I have an automatic link in the photo after I upload it.

Sites for putting in these links include Red Gage, Flickr, Facebook, Google Plus and any other sites where people upload photos. If the photos are special, reduce them in size so when people copy them (it's a tought act to control what happens once they are on the web) they won't get a high-resolution photo like the one you have on your computer.

Regarding the photo information: Put in a description in the photo to make it unique. Use at least 3 sentences in the description and don't copy the information from other sites.

Another advantage of uploading photos with this information is that you can increase the visibility of your work when people are looking for images. Good keywords are important. Good information leads to more people being familiar with your work.Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-29510944859421379882011-11-22T19:09:00.000-08:002011-11-22T19:09:41.590-08:00Google Adsense Placement Under A Wordpress Header

I have been trying to find the code and the where to put the adsense code below my header in the Wordpress 2010 theme. I had read that Google Adsense Placement under the header (for a 728 x 15 link unit) is optimal for getting people's attention and potential ad clicks. So, I finally found the solution.

Go to techmaish.com and you will find both the code to enter and where to put the code. There are two parts to the code, the ad code goes in the header.php file and there is some code to put into the style.css file.

I had to also go to my adsense site and create the code for the 728 x 15 ad, but that is really easy. So now, I just sit back and see if the site performs better. Hope springs eternal!Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-72400569196937731002011-11-13T18:13:00.000-08:002011-11-13T18:13:27.797-08:00Are You Sure You Want to Do This - Please Try Again FailureI have a wordpress blog site where I wanted to change the them to use more of the page and arrange some other items to my likings. So, I downloaded Atahualpa theme, put it in the appropriate folder on my web site and installed it. Then I tweaked a couple of things on it and clicked on SAVE, but the dreaded message "Are You Sure You Want to Do This - Please Try Again" showed up.

I made several attempts at changing some minor features, and still got the same message. I looked on the Internet for other people's experiences with this issue. Based on this advice, I tried the following things:

reloading the page,
different browsers,
restarting the browser,
using different browser on both a mac and a pc,
deleting the update file within my wp-content directory,
re-installing the wordpress,
changing back to the old theme,
discussing the problem with Host Gator
and a couple of other things that did not work. 24 hours had passed........

I then deactivated all of my plug ins (and I have a considerable number of them), and then reactivated 3-4 at a time. After each reactivation, I made a small tweak on the theme to see if it would accept it - like the background color (the 2010 theme has wide, unused borders). So, I did this reiteration about 10 times before I got to the problem, the Shared Items Post plug in. Not a very important plug in, so I will keep it deactivated.

So, here's to not seeing this frustration message again:

Are You Sure You Want to Do This - Please Try Again !!!!!

So, what does this have to do with Internet Marketing? Well, certain themes and layouts are much more amenable to optimizing advertisement layout. So that is my goal. We can talk about that later, I wanted to get this off my chest!Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-70796555318260356982011-11-10T12:50:00.000-08:002011-11-10T12:50:35.681-08:00Google Adsense Placement on My Qigong Healing Arts Blog

I did some reading about Google ad placement and decided today to put a menu type ad placement on the top of my pages that have the most traffic. The Google ad looks like a menu layout, and I put it below the title of each article. I have read some instructions on how to put it below the menu in the header, but I don't have a custom_functions.php file in the 2011 Wordpress theme.

I will do further research on that and if I find out how to do that, I will put the instructions on this blog entry. For the amount of traffic that I am getting on the Qigong Healing Arts Blog, I should be getting more Google adsense revenue. My overall revenue is on the rise, but there are contributions from my alternate site on Blogger, which is interesting, as it gets a lot less traffic. It is ranked higher on Google, but it is situated on page 2, vs. page 1 for the other blog. It has about a sixth of the traffic volume.

So if anyone reads this blog in the Internet Wilderness of Internet Marketing Blogs out there, I would appreciate all comments or suggestions. ....regarding Google ad placement with the 2011 theme.......whether it involves the need to change themes so there is a custom_functions.php file or whatever. Namaste!Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-1987346125596157992011-09-23T11:38:00.000-07:002011-09-23T11:38:38.040-07:00Market Samurai for Optimizing Your Income Potential on the WebIf I am considering working in a new niche, I first do a Google Adwords search to find terms that people use to look up information. When I find something of interest, I then use a program called Market Samurai for doing detailed keyword analysis and for assessment of potential competition for my selected keywords.

I strongly suggest using Market Samurai for these detailed analyses and finding profitable niches. The program uses data from Google for keyword analysis and from Yahoo for site rankings.

The program uses what are called the "Golden Rules", which is the default format for preliminary analyses. One of these rules is to have 50 or more hits per day for a keyword. This helps find the overall category that you can use to create a domain that has market potential. These settings can be changed to help find topics for pages or blogs that are related as well.
Scattering good content in many different locations on the web will help you get noticed. But don't make duplicate content, that kind of noticing will hurt your rankings and income potential. Here are some good sites where you can write articles for links:

Recommended Free Blog Sites

Weebly.com - This site is really easy to start up. There is no verification of addresses and you can enter any email to create an account. I like it for the mere simplicity of setting up a blog. The modular approach to building a page is really nice and easy to undo if you screw up placement. I highly recommend this site.

Blogger.com - I would be remiss if I didn't mention this. It is somewhat labrythian to set it up, but I have found that my sites that have 10 blog entries seem to get page rank quicker than sites than equivalent Wordpress sites. It is a mystery to me...

Wordpress.com - I have a domain that I own that has a blog with several pages and I am comfortable with this blog format. There is a lot of flexibility in how you make the blog look and there are plug-ins to help with various technical details like tracking traffic, automatic tweeting, meta tags, etc. I also have a free wordpress.com site that I use, however, the options are fewer on how you can do things. I find that this site is not ranking very well, too.

Amplify.com - This site is good for writing short blogs that have more content than a Tweet. It allows more characters and if you have something short to say, it is a good vehicle for that format. You can also create a blog post list for you main blog. Another format that is something like this is SheToldMe.com, but the advantage of this format is that you can get revenue from Google Adsense as well.

Posterous.com - I have used Posterous from the beginning because of the ability to send email posts to it. Recently, however, Blogger has added this feature. I still recommend posterous, however for quick posts and have another site for comments in niche areas of your main blog.

If anyone has other recommendations, I would like to hear what you have to say in a comment.Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-65375702257851442482010-07-12T22:20:00.000-07:002010-07-12T22:20:38.828-07:00Article Writing and Article Spinning for BacklinksArticle writing to get the word out is made easier if you use a service to spin your articles into variations. I don't recommend putting these articles on your regular or main blog; but they are useful for getting backlinks on secondary blogs that are part of your network of links. So look into article spinning to help you with that task. One article can be spun into 50 different articles by the use of synonyms and alternate sentence beginnings and endings. Don't do this for your primary high-quality sites like Ezine or other sites that may have a higher page rank because of the visibility and the potential for someone to click and visit your site. So be aware of this when you are placing the articles on different sites on the internet.

Also when you are writing your article, keep your keywords in it. Focus on 2-3 keywords and don't repeat them more than 3 times in the text, otherwise it gets spammy and may create a red flag. Also, you should be aware of synonyms that are within the topic that you are writing about. This creates an article that has more breadth and will be viewed more favorably by Google in your rankings.Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-622590340524883342010-02-23T10:24:00.000-08:002010-03-01T22:43:47.479-08:00Web Site Promotion TipsThis is a summary of the 13 Pillars of Internet Marketing Video used in class. The presenter first mentions that good website coding and design, increasing visitors and maximizing conversion rates are needed. (A conversion is getting a visitor to buy or sign up to be on your marketing list.)

1. Website Design. Best website design practice needs to follow simple coding that is efficient without duplicates. For instance, programs like Adobe DreamWeaver can make too much duplicate code, which can slows page opening on different web browsers.

For on-site optimization of the website, there are six things to consider:

(a) page title, it should correspond to the key word around which you are searching for traffic.

(b) a proper meta description, if you get onto the page and right click on the mouse button and click view source to see if your main keyword is within the meta description for the search engines to find your site easily and rank the site higher for relevance.

(c) heading tags - right click on source again to find the first heading, subtopic 1 and 2. They should all be related.

(d) 'alt' and 'title' tags - alternative tags that appear associated with images and links on the website. These tags should tell the search engine what the page is about.

(e) keyword rich navigation - if there are links to other pages, they should be related to your page.

(f) there should be an efficient URL format for your URL, it should not be complicated and should directly reflect the content of the page.

(g) precise relevance in the page, with one topic covered (don't cover a lot of different topics, confuses search engines), logical progression with 200-800 words, less is more, one call to action.

(h) conversion rates - goals per visitor, how to measure goals, capture contact details, test different page copy.

The Big Keyword Phrase Myth: For ranking high in Google, the best scheme is to use an extremely popular word that relates to your topic. What people really do when they are drilling down in their research, is to add more words that help them find their specific topic on interest. So these are the phrases that you should concentrate on to increase your potential for conversions.
You can wrongly rely on a keyword phrase, resulting in your focusing on your competitors vs. your own marketing ideas.

Longer phrases are easier to rank higher and convert much better because that phrase is specific enough to meet the need of the client doing the research. These are called long tail keywords. Phrases that are at least 3 words long are needed.

What you need to do first for keywords is to brainstorm categories of keywords that pertain to different aspects of what you want to work on within this market. Enter these categories into a website called Wordtracker, which is a free version.

3. Blog technology

Blog is short for “web log.” Results are given in a reverse chronological order. It is useful because it creates new information for your site. Sites rank higher with fresh information that is relevant. Two platforms that are popular are Blogger and Wordpress. With Wordpress, you can install the software on your own site, or you can use their server. Wordpress is probably the best open source blogging technology available. You can download it and modify the code to your needs. There are many types of themes that you can use on Blogger, over and above the default themes that are available when you open up a site. Many people have designed themes that you can use.

A blog is a great tool for content management. Wordpress has a great content management system. You can update your pages without needing to know the coding.

You can get Wordpress plugins, which are small, free software programs that add functional features to personalize the blog, including for monetization.

Blog pinging – an automated process that notifies other websites when a blog has a new posting. In the Wordpress blog, there is a series of update services in which you can enter websites that you want to notify when you have new content. So your new post will then be found on a hundred different websites.

It is also important to include RSS feeds. RSS = Really Simple Syndication. RSS makes it possible to see when new posts have been added to a blog. This can be done without visiting the blog site. This creates a link that lists a summary of the latest web page entries. When submitted to any site that supports RSS standard, the most recent posts are shown. People can subscribe to your RSS feed by using a reader such as Google Reader. Good way to provide updates to people who are interested in your products or writing, without having them give you their email address.

4. Autoresponders

Autoresponders are not automatic replies that are set up when you can't read your email. They are actually anything that can be delivered by email automatically on a planned schedule that you decide on. Content can include news items, email courses, free products for developing opt-in lists, which is a necessary marketing strategy.

Design templates can be used for these emails so that now HTML knowledge is needed. Newsletters can be “pre-loaded into an autoresponder.
These posts can be fed to RSS feeds on news services such as Feedzilla or you can use the URL for the Atom feed on Twitter Feed to make your followers aware of new posts on Twitter and several other services. All you have to do is to add /atom.xml to the end of your Blogspot URL. An example: if your blog is http://naturalremediesforhealthyliving.blogspot.com/, then your URL for the RSS or Atom feed would be http://naturalremediesforhealthyliving.blogspot.com/atom.xml.Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-25436595183830350462010-02-15T21:41:00.000-08:002010-02-16T06:31:06.357-08:00Generating Ideas for Making Money on the InternetHere are the four parts to a successful strategy in Internet marketing:

1.) First thing to determine:

a.) is there a market where you have an idea

b.) is anyone buying anything?

2.) Generating traffic - You need people to visit your web site. There are two ways to generate traffic that are free, and there is one way to pay, which is done after the other methods are employed.

3.) Conversion - getting people to buy. Involves copy writing and sales letters. Video and audio as well.

4.) Making a product available that people want. You can use the market to determine that.

Generating an idea is a creative process. Look in areas that you are passionate about and perhaps have a hobby. During the challenge period, carry around a notebook with you and jot down ideas as they come to you, because you may forget them when you get back to the computer. Good resources are magazines in different specialty areas, where you can find advertisements for things that people are selling.

There are niches and microniches. It is best to start in a microniche first so you can go through an entire process of marketing and will not be overwhelmed by things to do. The skills that you learn in working on a microniche can be applied to working more within the larger niche later. Example: If your passion is sell something on the Internet, "Internet marketing" would be classified as a market since there are millions of pages in that field on the web. There are many niches within this, including "web design" and "Internet marketing tips." Microniches that have good potential keyword phrases include "web promotion services" and "free web site promotion." These are all terms that can be found using the program Market Samurai.

So, start your research in an area where you have an interest or a passion. Look for things that are already being sold and then drill down and find marketable microniche keywords.
Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569565698136021556.post-8511768940569708462010-02-15T20:23:00.000-08:002010-04-22T06:41:46.319-07:00Video Series for Selecting KeywordsHere are the YouTube video addresses for selecting a microniche within a market:

To find a theme keyword:

To find category keywords:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRtl4JlB1xA

Here are some of the terms explained:

SEO = search engine optimization, means optimizing a given site for better ranking on search engines such as Google

SEO traffic = daily traffic on the web for a given keyword or keyword phrase

PBR = phrase to broad match ratio, term used with versus without quotes as shown below for the term phrase

Phrase = the keyword phrase for your given niche or microniche, searched for on the web using the phrase surrounded by quotes as shown here for the Sony alpha 200 Camera Lenses microniche:

"Sony alpha 200 Camera Lenses"

So, the goal in looking for keywords is to find a microniche in which to start that has at least 80 page visits per day, and where there are less than 30,000 pages on the web. The number of page visits is important because it will help you make money through clicks on advertisements or through affiliate marketing efforts, if you choose that method of marketing. Have a microniche with less than 30,000 pages increases your chances of success because there is less competition from professionals in the market.Randy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14553209161346178512noreply@blogger.com0
